Ketamine for Anxiety and PTSD: When Traditional Treatment Isn't Enough
Traditional antidepressants target serotonin and norepinephrine. They can take weeks or months to yield results, and they don't work for everyone. Ketamine works differently. It acts on the brain's primary excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate, by blocking N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. This creates a controlled surge of glutamate that increases the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), often described as "Miracle-Gro" for brain cells.
